Microsoft have issued new SSL certificates for MSN that makes it more difficult for thirdparty-software to accept these certificates.

The error-message is:
"Unable to validate certificate. The certificate for .....msn.com could not be validated. The certificate chain present is invalid."

This issue can also be solved by installing the newest Pidgin, or by running this script.

To run this script type:
sudo sh pidgin_certificate_fix.sh
